WEB207 Media Diary

The following is a record of my media use for a single 24 hour period. This is to be used to compare it to an estimate of my media use in 5 years time.

6:00am Woke to news bulletin on the clock radio and listened to the news for 12 minutes before starting the day.
7:10am Turned on the radio in the kitchen, listened to interviews and talk back while having breakfast, then continued to listen to the radio intermittently as I moved from one room to another getting ready for the day.
8:05am Booked cinema tickets online and checked emails (no new emails of interest). Checked fax machine (one fax to be passed on to another family member).
9:08am Turned radio off.
9:10am Grab ipod and go outside to wash the car. Listen to lecture and some music.
10:40am Read the local newspaper while having morning tea.
1:00pm Listen to the radio while having lunch - listening to a commercial station for music.
2:30pm Check Curtin email and discussion board for Web 207. Read two unit readings.
3:28pm Received phone call on land line from a friend. Spoke for 1hour 35 min.
5:30pm Turn on television and listen to game show while preparing dinner (I can not see the televison from the kitchen). When the 6:00pm news comes on I stop preparing and move around the corner into the family room where I can see the television. I watch the first couple of news items then return to the kitchen to finish cooking.
6:12pm Receive a telephone call on the land line from a telemarketer.
7:00pm Television remains on but the station is changed so that my husband can watch the 7:00pm news. No additional news from the bulletin I listened to at 6:oopm.
8:34pm Sit down to watch television - despite the new digital channels we are still unable to find anything we want to watch. We decide to watch a couple of episodes of an old television series we have on DVD.

Summary:

During this 24 hour period I,
listened to the radio for about 2 hours and 50 minutes,
used the internet for about 1 hour and 5 minutes,
read the newspaper for about 20 minutes,
listened to my ipod for 1 hour and 10 minutes,
talked on the telephone (land line) for about 1 hour and 37 minutes,
watched a DVD for 40 minutes,
and had the televison on for about 2 hours (most of this time I only listened to the television as I was performing other tasks).

This made me smile! Having more choice certainly doesn't guarantee that there'll be anything *good* on.
